On the first Sunday of every month, at 4:00 pm, we have a worship service designed to engage individuals with developmental disabilities.
The goal is to reach out and encourage people with developmental disabilities to become part of a faith community. The service is adapted to engage the attention and interest of individuals with special needs along with their caregivers, families, and other supportive members in the community. The environment is accepting and welcoming to all children of God.
Sharon Post, Rejoicing Spirits Ministry Program Director, says, "There are many reasons for local residents to join in this faith experience including lots of music and joyous singing; brief, meaningful messages; and the opportunity to participate in a no shushing environment. All faiths are welcomed to this love-filled community."
The principle of including all individuals into one community comes from the Bible verse, "So that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other." A priority to everyone involved in the Rejoicing Spirits ministry is to overlook each other's differences and instead value all people as one body. The service is a great example of overcoming prejudice and instead creating unity.
